What the Converted Figure Means
At 17,760 rupiah to the dollar, a $50,000 US salary is Rp 888,000,000 a year — about 888 juta rupiah, or Rp 74,000,000 a month. Per hour, across the 2,080 hours in a conventional US work year, it is Rp 426,923. Change the dollar figure in the box above and every number moves with it.
The digit count is the first thing to get used to. Indonesia never redenominated the rupiah, so ordinary salaries run to eight figures and nobody reads them out in full: Rp 74,000,000a month is “74 juta” in conversation, and the annual figure is 888 juta. Written down at home it uses dots where English uses commas — Rp 74.000.000— which is worth knowing before you read an Indonesian job ad.
Two things the number is not. It is not take-home pay: US tax comes off first, and if you spend enough of the year in Indonesia the salary can pick up Indonesian tax as well. And it is not a measure of what the money buys, which is the question most people are really asking. The Jakarta and Bali section below answers that one against published figures rather than impressions.
The $60,000Line: Indonesia’s Remote Worker Visa
Most people converting a US salary into rupiah are not being paid in rupiah. They are working remotely for a US employer and wondering whether the plan is affordable. For that reader there is a hard number that matters more than the exchange rate: since 1 April 2024 Indonesia has issued a Remote Worker Visa, the E33G, and it requires proof of at least $60,000 a yearin income from an employer or clients outside Indonesia — Rp 1,065,600,000 at the rate used here. Applicants also need a bank balance of at least $2,000 maintained for the three months before filing. The permit runs for up to a year and can be renewed once.
The reference salary on this page sits $10,000 below that bar. That is the useful thing to know before doing any cost-of-living arithmetic: at $50,000the E33G is not available, and the alternative routes — a visit visa, a sponsored work KITAS tied to an Indonesian employer — carry different rules, different durations, and different tax consequences. Immigration assesses the income requirement in dollar terms at the exchange rate on the day, so earnings in another currency are converted rather than excluded.
The E33G is an immigration permission, not a tax exemption. It does not switch off the 183-day residency test described below, and the two are decided by different agencies on different criteria. Plenty of people read the visa as settling the tax question. It does not.

IDR to USD: Indonesian Salaries in Dollars
Indonesian pay is quoted per month, so this table starts there and works back to an annual dollar figure — useful when you are weighing a Jakarta offer against a dollar one:
| IDR Monthly | IDR Annual | USD Monthly | USD Annual |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rp 5,000,000 | Rp 60,000,000 | $282 | $3,378 |
| Rp 8,000,000 | Rp 96,000,000 | $450 | $5,405 |
| Rp 12,000,000 | Rp 144,000,000 | $676 | $8,108 |
| Rp 20,000,000 | Rp 240,000,000 | $1,126 | $13,514 |
| Rp 35,000,000 | Rp 420,000,000 | $1,971 | $23,649 |
| Rp 50,000,000 | Rp 600,000,000 | $2,815 | $33,784 |
| Rp 75,000,000 | Rp 900,000,000 | $4,223 | $50,676 |
One local convention to check before converting an offer: many Indonesian employers pay a religious holiday allowance, the Tunjangan Hari Rayaor THR, worth one month’s wage to anyone with a full year of service. It is a statutory entitlement rather than a bonus at the employer’s discretion, so a monthly figure quoted in a contract is usually worth thirteen months over the year, not twelve — a difference of 8.3% on the annual number.
Jakarta vs. Bali: What Rp 74,000,000 a Month Covers
The short version. On published figures Jakarta is the more expensive of the two — it is the highest-spending province in Indonesia, and its 2026 minimum wage of Rp 5,729,876 a month is 79% above Bali’s Rp 3,207,459. But the gap narrows sharply in the part of Bali foreigners actually move to: Badung regency, which contains Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu, sets the highest district wage floor on the island at Rp 3,791,002. Compare Jakarta with Bali-the-province and Bali wins on cost; compare it with Canggu and the difference is much smaller than the reputation suggests.
Indonesia sets a minimum wage province by province each year (the UMP), with districts free to set a higher floor of their own (the UMK). Those decrees are the hardest published numbers available, and they track local cost levels closely because that is partly what they are calculated from. Alongside them, BPS — the national statistics agency — publishes average monthly spending per person by province, which measures what residents do spend rather than what they are legally owed. Both are below, against the Rp 74,000,000 a month the reference salary converts to:
| Monthly Benchmark | IDR | USD | Times Covered by Rp 74,000,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jakarta minimum wage (UMP 2026) | Rp 5,729,876 | $323 | 12.9× |
| Badung minimum wage (UMK 2026) — Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu | Rp 3,791,002 | $213 | 19.5× |
| Denpasar minimum wage (UMK 2026) | Rp 3,499,879 | $197 | 21.1× |
| Bali minimum wage (UMP 2026) | Rp 3,207,459 | $181 | 23.1× |
| Jakarta spending per person (BPS, 2025) | Rp 2,962,412 | $167 | 25.0× |
| Bali spending per person (BPS, 2025) | Rp 1,964,618 | $111 | 37.7× |
Read down the last column and the scale of the currency gap is obvious: $50,000 converts to roughly 12.9 times the Jakarta wage floor and 23.1times Bali’s. Against average spending per person — Rp 2,962,412 a month in Jakarta, Rp 1,964,618 in Bali, so Jakarta runs about 1.5times higher — the same salary covers 25people’s typical Jakarta spending or 38people’s in Bali.
Three cautions before treating those multiples as a budget. They are averages over entire provinces, and a foreigner’s spending pattern is not the average one — imported goods, international schools, private healthcare, and villa rents in Seminyak or Canggu all price against foreign incomes. Bali’s advantage over Jakarta is real at the provincial level but thinner in the specific neighbourhoods most remote workers pick, which is precisely what the Badung UMK sitting 583,543 rupiah above the provincial floor is telling you. And a minimum wage is a legal floor, not a typical salary: a Jakarta developer earns a multiple of the UMP, so the figures above measure the currency gap rather than a like-for-like comparison of jobs.
The practical split is not really cost. Jakarta is where the Indonesian salary market is — the offers, the offices, the sponsored work permits. Bali is where the dollar-earning remote worker goes, and there the local wage level is context rather than competition. Which of the two numbers above matters to you depends entirely on which side of that line you are on.
PPh 21: What Indonesia Would Charge on the Same Salary
Indonesian tax residency is decided by presence, not paperwork. You become a resident by living in Indonesia, by being present for more than 183 days in any 12-month period, or by being present during a tax year and intending to stay. Residents are taxed on worldwide income, so the question “would Indonesia tax my US salary?” usually resolves to “how long are you staying?”
The resident rates, set by the 2021 Harmonisation of Tax Regulations law and in force since the 2022 tax year, run 5% on the first 60 juta, 15% to 250 juta, 25% to 500 juta, 30% to 5 miliar, and 35% above that. They apply not to gross pay but to taxable income, after the standard occupational deduction (biaya jabatan, 5% of gross capped at Rp 6,000,000 a year) and the personal allowance (PTKP, Rp 54,000,000 for a single filer with no dependants, plus Rp 4,500,000 each for a spouse and up to three dependants).
On the reference salary that works out as follows. Rp 888,000,000 less Rp 6,000,000 of biaya jabatan and Rp 54,000,000 of PTKP leaves Rp 828,000,000 of taxable income, which attracts roughly Rp 192,400,000of PPh 21 — an effective rate of about 21.7% on the gross figure. This site’s rough US estimate on the same $50,000— 2024 federal brackets plus 7.65% FICA, single filer, no standard deduction and no state tax — comes to $9,878, an effective rate near 19.8%.
That is the finding worth carrying away, because it runs against the assumption most people arrive with: at this income level Indonesia is not a low-tax jurisdiction relative to the US. The 30% band starts at 500 juta of taxable income, which a $50,000salary clears comfortably once converted. Both estimates are upper bounds — the Indonesian one ignores deductible BPJS contributions, the US one ignores the standard deduction, which is the larger of the two omissions — so treat the comparison as directional rather than exact.
Two provisions push back the other way, and both are worth professional advice rather than a rule of thumb. The United States and Indonesia have had an income tax treaty in force since December 1990, which allocates taxing rights between them and is the normal route out of being taxed twice on the same salary. And under the 2020 Omnibus Law, a foreign national with qualifying expertise who becomes an Indonesian tax resident can be taxed only on Indonesian-sourced income for their first four tax years — though electing that regime interacts with treaty relief, so the two cannot simply be stacked. If you are a US citizen, note also that leaving the US does not end your US filing obligation: the US taxes worldwide income regardless of residence.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much is a $50,000 US salary in Indonesian rupiah?
At 1 USD = 17,760 IDR, a $50,000 annual salary is Rp 888,000,000 a year — about 888 juta rupiah — or Rp 74,000,000 a month. Across a 2,080-hour work year that is Rp 426,923 an hour. That is a straight conversion of gross pay, before tax on either side.
What is the USD to IDR exchange rate used here?
This page uses an approximate mid-market rate of 1 USD = 17,760 IDR. The rupiah floats, and Bank Indonesia intervenes to smooth rather than fix it, so the pair drifts steadily instead of jumping. Because the number is so large, small moves are easy to underrate: a 100-rupiah shift in the rate is Rp 5,000,000 a year on this salary. The rate your bank or transfer provider gives you will also sit below the mid-market rate quoted here.
How much is Rp 10,000,000 a month in US dollars?
Rp 10,000,000 a month is Rp 120,000,000 a year, which converts to $6,757 at 17,760 rupiah to the dollar — roughly $563 a month. For scale, that monthly figure is about 1.7 times the 2026 Jakarta minimum wage.
Is a $50,000 salary enough for Indonesia's remote worker visa?
No — it is short of the threshold. The E33G Remote Worker Visa, open since 1 April 2024, asks for proof of at least $60,000 in annual income earned from an employer or clients outside Indonesia, which is Rp 1,065,600,000 a year at the rate on this page. A $50,000 salary is $10,000 below that. Applicants also need a bank balance of at least $2,000 for the three months before filing. The visa runs for up to a year and can be renewed once.
Do I pay Indonesian tax on a US salary while living in Bali?
Possibly, and the trigger is time rather than intent. You become an Indonesian tax resident by being present for more than 183 days in any 12-month period, by residing in Indonesia, or by being present during a tax year and intending to stay. Residents are taxed on worldwide income, so a US salary can fall inside the Indonesian net even though it is paid abroad. Applying PPh 21 to Rp 888,000,000 gives roughly Rp 192,400,000, an effective rate near 21.7%. Two things cut against that: the US and Indonesia have had an income tax treaty in force since December 1990, and foreign nationals with qualifying expertise can elect to be taxed only on Indonesian-sourced income for their first four years of residency. Both are worth an accountant rather than a blog post.
Is Bali actually cheaper than Jakarta?
On the official measures, yes, and by a consistent margin. Bali's 2026 provincial minimum wage is Rp 3,207,459 a month against Jakarta's Rp 5,729,876, and BPS put average monthly spending per person at Rp 1,964,618 in Bali against Rp 2,962,412 in Jakarta for 2025 — Jakarta is roughly 1.5 times higher and the most expensive province in the country. The caution is that those are province-wide averages over residents, and the parts of Bali foreigners actually move to are not average. Badung regency, which contains Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu, carries the highest district minimum wage in Bali at Rp 3,791,002 — above the provincial floor, and a hint that the expat enclaves price closer to foreign incomes than to local ones.
Is the converted figure what I would actually receive?
No. This is a gross-to-gross currency conversion. A US salary is taxed in the US before it reaches you, income that becomes taxable in Indonesia carries PPh 21 on top, and the transfer itself costs money — providers quote a rate below the mid-market one and often add a fee. Net all three out before comparing an Indonesian offer with a US one.
