About Salary Converter

Salary Converter turns one pay number into every other one — hourly, weekly, biweekly, monthly, and annual — and adjusts for the things a back-of-the-envelope conversion ignores: overtime, PTO, and the actual hours you work.

What this site is for

Pay is quoted in whatever unit is convenient for the person quoting it. A job listing says $28 an hour, a recruiter says $60K, a contract says $4,800 a month, and comparing the three in your head is genuinely hard. Salary Converter exists to make that comparison trivial. Enter any figure in the main converter and it lands on a fully populated breakdown — not a blank form — so you can see the equivalent in every pay period at once.

Beyond the core converter we publish focused pages for the questions people actually search: what a specific salary is per hour, whether a given salary is any good once cost of living is factored in, how pay stretches across different cities, and how to negotiate for more of it.

Who runs it

Salary Converter is built and maintained by Pond Software, an independent studio that makes small, fast, single-purpose web tools. We are not a bank, a payroll company, or a recruiter, and we do not take a cut of anyone's salary. The site is free, runs entirely in your browser, and asks nothing of you — no account, no email, no upload of your pay details to a server.

How we calculate

Every figure on the site follows the same transparent assumptions so the numbers stay comparable from page to page:

  • A standard full-time year is 2,080 hours — 40 hours a week over 52 weeks. Where a page assumes different hours or unpaid time off, it says so.
  • Take-home estimates use current-year federal brackets and FICA for a single filer taking the standard deduction, with state income tax noted separately. These are estimates to compare against, not a substitute for a paycheck or a tax return.
  • Cost-of-living comparisons use a national index of 100, so "what a salary feels like" in a city is that salary scaled by the local index — a like-for-like buying-power number.

When a figure can't be verified from a reliable source, we leave it out rather than guess. If you spot a number that looks wrong, tell us — corrections are welcome and we act on them.

The important caveat

Salary Converter is an informational tool, not financial advice. Real take-home pay depends on your withholding, benefits, retirement contributions, local taxes, and details no general calculator can know. Use our numbers to compare offers and understand pay math, then confirm the specifics with your employer, a payroll professional, or a tax advisor. See our terms of use and privacy policy for the full details.
